Foundations of Mathematics and Physics Institute
Mission
The Institute conducts independent research on the conceptual and structural bases of foundational mathematical and physical theories. Its mathematical work focuses on axiomatic systems, including the study of “nothing”, a notion displaced from mathematics since the 16th century. A significant impact re-emerged only within set theory, influencing the axiomatic system ZFC, whose underlying assumptions call for critical scrutiny. This motivates a renewed examination of modern set-theoretic foundations. In physics, the research investigates classical structures underlying quantum mechanics and relativistic theories. The aim is to clarify fundamental principles and improve conceptual intelligibility without questioning formal validity or experimental confirmation.
About the Researcher
Gert Treiber’s academic education in physical chemistry provided a solid background in mathematics as well, and led to a PhD degree. After a professional career in the chemical industry, he renewed his scientific interests and attended university lectures in mathematics, logic, physics, and philosophy. Further studies revealed that the foundations of mathematics rest not only on logic but also on philosophical and even religious influences, making critical examination indispensable. Relativity theory and quantum mechanics, despite their formal success, face persistent interpretational difficulties; the possibilities of a renewed reliance on classical concepts are therefore being explored.
